My Speed Queen Review

by Shalice Noel

I absolutely adore my washer, and let me tell you why.

Over the years, I’ve tried various brands and several front loaders, which often ended up with unpleasant odors after prolonged use and forgetting to leave the doors open. When my family and I moved into our first house in Georgia two years ago, I found myself in need of a new washer and dryer. Despite hearing recommendations for different brands, I was repeatedly advised to consider a Speed Queen. Unfortunately, they were in high demand, and many distributors were sold out with lengthy waiting lists. As a busy mom of five, waiting six months for a washer and dryer simply wasn’t feasible. So, I reluctantly opted for an LG front loader, which never quite met my expectations in terms of cleaning effectiveness. Needless to say, I was thrilled to replace it.

Then came the TC5 top loader from Speed Queen. With its 30-minute wash option, heavy-duty performance, absence of odors, and even earning praise from Levi for getting out tough stains, I became an instant fan.

I did encounter one hiccup the week we moved in when I overloaded the washer with my duvet cover, causing water to spill all over the floor and tripping the electrical line. After Reid fixed the issue and we reset the wires in the basement, my Speed Queen was back to running smoothly.

Established in 1908 in Ripon, WI, Speed Queen, owned by Alliance Laundry Systems LLC, won me over with its claim that their washers last 25 years. Renowned for their durability, the brand attributes this to “ergonomic motors, suspension systems, and the use of only the best materials designed to withstand wear, tear, and abuse.”

Which one did you get?

Speed Queen TC5 Classic top load

Model:TC5003WN

SKU:6505836

Does the lid lock?

No, the lid doesn’t lock.

Pros

One significant advantage is the quick turnaround time for clean clothes, typically around 30 minutes! Many of my readers have praised the quality of these commercial washers and dryers. Some even mentioned that they work for warranty companies and seldom receive calls regarding Speed Queens, highlighting their reliability.

Cons

It can get quite loud during operation, so I make sure to close the laundry room door.

What do you think, have you tried a Speed Queen?

My Speed Queen worked great for almost five years. Now it won’t even turn on ! I would attempt to fix it but there was no manual provided when I purchased the machine.

Hi Tom,
Did you register it when you bought it? You must register it first before you call in. Also, I’d call the distributor that you purchased from. Hope that helps!

Compared to the junk that is being offered to us out there I would recommend this machine overall. The pros are that it really washes your clothes good. Like my clothes are so clean and there’s no odor that some washing machines will develop. It leaves them spun almost completely dry so it spins really well. The dryer works really well. Their customer service is great, we did have a problem when I washed a heavy king size blanket and killed the machine. They replaced needed parts no problem. They said it was a bad connection inside it and had nothing to do with the blanket. The cons are that they are expensive, they are very loud, and so I hope you have a dedicated laundry room that you can close the door because I don’t and it’s quite loud in my living room. I personally I find the dials that you use to select things limiting. Like I can’t click on extra rinse as well as heavy duty. And there’s other examples of the dials that are very confusing and I found myself consulting the manual often. But once I had it figured out it’s good. The dryer doesn’t have a selection for heat. You have to figure that out from the manual. The wash tub is relatively small, not extremely small, just not like the new washing machine that are available, and you can’t overpack it like you do front loaders. As long as it lasts a really long time I’m good with it and so far it’s been a year. Personally I am not as excited with it as I thought I would be, but I would still recommend it based on our choices for appliances. It’s pretty solid built, but this is not the same machine you find in the laundromats. It’s not as heavy duty.

Does your Speed Queen knot, tangle or crease the clothes in the wash cycle? I want to replace my 3-4 year old top loading whirlpool with a wash disc instead of an agitator that puts deep creases into woven fabrics, which do not come out in the dryer, and I’m back to ironing.

Hi Teresa
No it doesn’t! It is my favorite washer/dryer to date. The clothes naturally crease but not abnormally. Hope that helps! I’ve had about 7 different brands and this is my favorite.

These clothes washers are supposed to run reliably for 25 years according to the manufacturer. I have had mine for 6+ years and the hot water valve has stopped working; he repair man from the dealer said he has seen this problem before–the only solution is to replace the valve. The total cost is $300–that’s the good news. The bad news? Replacement valves are not available! Which means that a LOT of these valves have been failing and all the replacement valves have been used up. And just why hasn’t there been any action by the manufacturer to notify their customers and offer to pay for the needed repairs?

I would not recommend these machines. I have 1 for 1.5 years . Valves have been replaced the last 6 months every 2 months and company is saying it is my water causing the issues. I have had my water tested just to prove nothing wrong with my water. I was told my water is fine the speed queen just want my warranty to go out so it will not be there problem. Never again and shame on them.

I just bought a speed queen set and had problems with the dryer way before its one-year anniversary. It makes a clunking sound, and a reputable repairman has been out seven times to service it. During the last service call, they refused to service it, claiming, the loud clunking sounds are normal, and said that’s what commercial dryers do. Yeah, right. Interesting how they think customers are that dumb.

My mother has had speed queen for decades and I made a purchase based on her recommendation. Unfortunately, I don’t think their products are made like they were years ago. I will never buy another speed queen. It is sad if this is the best American product we have for washers and dryers. I plan to replace them with foreign products that last much longer and are a quarter of the cost.

Hi Keren
My SQ is definitely louder than my lG dryer, but washes and dried 100X better.
