One of my favorite things to do is where a swimsuit as a bodysuit. It’s like a two for one. I paired it with white jeans, lace coverup, wedge espadrilles and a beach tote. Chic and beach ready for lunch appropriate. PS. my suit is only $35. What do you think?

I started out blogging thrifting in Chicago. You would be amazed at what I would find: designer duds and quality basics. It also afforded me the freedom to go bold with my style. For example, I usually would find a $5 tee and $9 crazy stripe pants, so no sweat to the wallet. And if I didn’t end up liking it, I would just donate it back or sell it on my instagram shop @herchicboutique. It was a fun and mildly therapeutic habit. And habit it became. I would get a sitter so I could go down there and thrift. On the days I didn’t have a sitter, I would bring all four kids, two holding the cart (if they were being good) and two inside the cart. I would always bring tons of crackers and cringe at how many we left in our path. Hilarious. But I always found some treasures from Smythe blazers to James Pearse tees to Frame denim just to name a few, all of which I would boast to Reid when he got home. As a stylist, I was in heaven, the suspense of not knowing what I would find was addictive. Fast forward almost 4 years, and I love blogging, and I’m grateful to have brands sending clothes to me. However, occasionally I buy $39 jeans with a great hem, slash the knees and fray wherever necessary. So, that’s exactly what I did for today’s post. I love an under $50 item I don’t freak out when dirt, coffee, and the like get spilled on them. But I’m SO INCREDIBLY grateful for the people and places and faces I have had the pleasure of meeting through my blog and instagram and I will never forget that little dingy thrift shop where it all started, and the countless times my family, my uber driver, my neighbor, etc,  took pictures for me. Thank God. I would not be where I am today.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

Summer is all about picnics, running to the beach on a whim and catching the sunset, just in time. So, there’s usually no time to overthink an outfit. My fun go-to is gingham, flouncy sleeves, jeans and sequin flats. I’m not sure about you, but I live in these flats as well. The best way to style wrap tops is with simple gray or white jeans, flats and a small bag.

This Memorial Day weekend couldn’t have come at a better time. We need an extra day to prepare for our upcoming road trip to Chicago. Think lots of kids outfits in ziploc bags, trail mix, and piles everywhere. Did I mention piles? Funny enough, we ditched the to-do list and headed to Manhattan Beach and pool party with our church. It was definitely fun filled and they didn’t want it to end. Shop my Summer uniform lately, white shirts, cutoffs and a baseball cap. What’s your Summer uniform?

Spring break starts this weekend, so I’ll be chasing all four kids all week long, ditching the heels, and grabbing my flats. I’m loving the lace up sandal trend with cropped jeans and frays of course. Try it at home, you won’t be disappointed. Go HERE and tell me which is your favorite! Enter on Instagram to win a pair of your choice, winner announced Monday!

Lately, I’m loving a white tank, stripe tunic and favorite jeans for a weekday outfit. Reid and I are headed to Mexico in the next couple weeks to celebrate our Anniversary though late. I will definitely be bringing this pom pom hat, dress, and stripes south of the border.

Making Dinner Look Complicated, the Easy Way

Dinner time in our house is all about making sure those little mouths are fed. We don’t usually spend a lot of time on presentation because there’s not much time to spend. But there’s a simple way to dress up dinner when you want to feel like a master chef on a weeknight: Pesto. A few tablespoons can turn baked chicken into Italian Chicken – top it with some tomato slices and you’ve got a gourmet meal on your hands, with about 5 minutes of prep.

That said, I like to make my own pesto to keep on hand for just such a culinary occasion.

Homemade Basil Pesto

What You’ll Need:

4 C Fresh Basil Leaves (about 3 bunches)

1/2 C Grapeseed Oil + a drizzle or two

1/3 C Pine Nuts

2 Garlic Cloves

1 t Salt

How You’ll Do It:

1 – Toast the pine nuts. To do this, put the nuts in a dry skillet (no oil here) and cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently for about 3-5 minutes or until golden. Take them out of the pan and let them cool on a plate for a minute.

2- Put everything in a blender and blend until paste forms. You’ll want a spatula to push the basil down every so often.

3 – Store your pesto in a jar and drizzle a layer of oil on top. This keeps it from oxidizing and will help maintain that fresh green color. It’ll keep for about a week in the fridge or up to six months in the freezer

Today was the last day of Vacation Bible School, as well as gobs of traffic and a few tantrums to boot. And since I’m in such a good mood due to the above-mentioned, I’ll be a good friend and let you know that this top is only $28.  It moves like a dream and it’s light and airy. Definitely packing this for our day at the beach tomorrow. Because, yes, there are never enough stripes.

After a weekend at the beach, getting brunch, and filling up the small pool on the deck, we are exhausted. Father’s Day weekend was packed but the good kind of packed. The kids insisted on getting daddy a robe which was probably a poor choice considering it’s over 100 degrees today. Speaking of, nothing spells first day of summer like paisley and a pop of red. And a babydoll dress is my go-to to stay cool. I kick myself every time I don’t wear a dress for church, like yesterday, I chose jeans. Wrong move. It was hot and sticky and I was handing out snacks, waters, and breaking a sweat! Not only does this dress have pockets but can be worn over leggings or jeans. It’s all about options. And staying cool.

Happy first day of summer!

We’re back in LA and school is out. While I have mixed feelings about having all four kids at home, I have to say I’m excited to explore more of the LA area, namely the hills, the zoo, Venice Beach, and Lacy Park for picnics. And to those of you who ask how I keep my white jeans white? I never put them in the dryer. Instead, I leave them on the dry rack and the sun does my bleaching. Cheers to lots of exploring, summertime, and malbec on the porch. Have a great week!
