Mother’s Day Outfit

Blouse in small // Pants (size 4) // Heels (fit TTS)

Motherhood is a constantly changing role, one that consistently brings joy and fulfillment, but also stress and worry. When I think about what I used to think of being a mom when growing up, and what I know about it now, it is almost laughable. So here is what I would say to my younger self.

8 Things I Would Tell a New Mom

1. Having a “real” job in the “real” world actually works against you when you become a mom. Because you are spoiled. Lunchbreak? No such thing. You do lunch. Paid overtime? How about no pay even during the day. Coffee breaks? You get the coffee without the break … but no time to use the bathroom so you might want to rethink that coffee. Personal space? What’s yours is also the kids, including your food, your body, your time, and anything lovely you ever bought in your house (including those silk curtains you saved up for but were subsequently peed on).

2. You have to find your Thing, that thing that recharges you and makes you keep ticking. It could be reading, taking a luxurious bath, painting, or watching Netflix. If you don’t find it and nourish it (which literally means to find the time to do it, even if it’s only 30 minutes a day), you will get lost in the Forest of Mothering. And nobody ever comes out sane from that Forest.
3. Kids are a little bit like moles. Did you know that moles manage to both find and devour their food in an average of 227 milliseconds? That’s a quarter of a second. And it only gets worse as the kids get older. So basically, if you want food, you gotta eat fast.
4. You will become one of those people who uses dry shampoo because showers are as plentiful as flowers in a desert.
5. Your fourth child has been calling you, “Ma” (like from Little House on the Prairie) for a year and not only have you just noticed, but you don’t care
6. Messy houses just mean lived-in houses. Maybe designate a clean up day once-a-week. Or once-a-month? We can be flexible that way. Main point? Don’t stress it.
7. You are a selfish being. You are also blessed because children help you realize this in ways you wouldn’t imagine. Motherhood shows you what you’re made of while also taking and taking from you, and yet you almost feel stronger for it.
8. When you’re in the trenches of Motherhood, life is about survival, as in, “I hope I make it to tomorrow.” But it doesn’t stay there. If you manage to get beyond it, the relationships forged and the people formed are an incredible gift.

The older I get, the more I desire healthy kids who fear the Lord and love each other. Life is so short and I want to redeem the time by making sweet memories with my five.

I was telling one of my readers, its been SO hard to get blog posts out lately with a toddler, homeschooling 4 kids, and a husband at home. Our mornings start with “whats for breakfast,” than I find myself cleaning up pancake batter everywhere, feeding Levi, stepping on pancakes on the floor, asking the kids if they did their English homework, etc. Than we do math and history etc. I make lunch, we clean up, I do some work, prep dinner, clean up go for a walk, watch an episode of The Middle, clean up, wash face, and hit the sack! All that to say, its been busier than ever. While you my reader is busier than ever, stores everywhere like Nordstrom are having crazy sales.

Mother’s Day Gifts

As Mother’s Day rolls around, Reid invariably asks me what I want at some point. I usually ask for a massage or homemade cards. This year I asked for some jewelry like the kind my mother used to wear, lots of pearls in the form of elegant rings and earrings. LAGOS Jewelry has been a favorite for a while now, for both their quality and assortment of jewelry. I don’t like bulky jewelry or lots of hearts, so when I saw these dainty, detailed, and studded pieces, I fell in love. I don’t know what I love more, the rings, the bracelet, or the necklace? All of them? I hope to pass my jewelry to my daughters just like my mom passed some of hers to me. LAGOS Jewelry has that timelessness that I look for when scouting out jewelry, and I’m always thrilled when I add one of their pieces to my collection.
This Mother’s Day I’m so grateful for my Mom who put up with my teenage attitude and awkward stages, and continues to be selfless in serving her kids and grandkids. Isn’t motherhood the most beautiful adventure? I think it is. And the weird thing is, I really will miss these days of floors cluttered with annoying blocks or hundreds of frozen peas, constant bickering but also constant hugs and kisses. Happy almost Mother’s Day to the moms, the grandmothers, and those who wish to be mothers. We appreciate you!

Confession: my jeans are tight. I’ve been living in joggers and pj’s till 12 noon. Or later. However, I have started, by day 25 of quarantine, to get dressed, make my bed, and get some blog posts on here! I’m not a dietician, or doctor, but I have included some of my personal tips for avoiding gaining weight during this time at home.

DRINK LOTS OF H20

We need to train ourselves to drink water. We go through our days drinking coffee, smoothies, more coffee, and then we wonder why we have an afternoon headache. We are dehydrated! Here’s a tip: Drink 3 glasses of water before 12 noon. This helps a lot. You should drink a total of 8 glasses a day, and if that feels like too much, lemon water helps. Also, when I get a hankering for a peanut butter cup (more on this later) I make a (calorie-free) lemonade.

Calorie Free Lemonade

8 oz filtered water

1 lemon, squeezed

1 full dropper of stevia

5 cubes of ice

Mix all ingredients and enjoy!

Add Fab4 smoothie to your breakfast routine

I feel more fueled and focused when I have my Fab4 smoothie, originally published HERE.

#FAB4Smoothie: Protein (20g minimum) + Fiber (10g minimum) + 1 Tbsp. Fat + Handful Greens + 1/4 Cup Fruit + Superfoods + Liquid

2 scoops Vital Proteins collagen powder // 1 TB almond butter// 1 frozen banana // 1 cup frozen pineapple // 2 cups frozen organic spinach // 1 TB chia seeds // unsweetened almond milk // 2 meyer lemons (add at the end) //

Directions: blend till smooth in a vitamix or blender. I add the lemons at the end and drink immediately.

I explain more in this post about how I am changing the way our family eats.

Add a pilates ring to your routine

I place it in between my thighs while I sit for a thigh workout. Try doing it 100x!

Drink ACV

Add 2 tablespoons to water and ice and drink before a meal. Reid and I have one after dinner. Whenever it makes sense, just add this to your regimen.

Will let you know how they go!

On Thursday, we have the privilege of sharing our home with you! Since we bought it at the end of December, it has been a whirlwind.

One of our first purchases was a SECTIONAL. So many friends and decorators alike suggested we purchase the “RH Cloud Couch.” Seemed like a cult favorite so I did some research, which included going to the Restoration Hardware Outlet in Ontario and seeing the couch in person. Yikes, it looked like a sunken-in mess. I told Reid we’d better go back to the drawing board and do more research. I opened it to my readers on stories one day asking for any sectional advice. One reader who happened to be a realtor, suggested Cantoni Design. After more online research on Cantoni, which we were already liking the look of, we found something we think we liked. Since they had two locations in SoCal, one in LA, and one in Irvine, we planned a trip! Honestly, the best advice I can give you regarding couch shopping is to see it in person! Sit on it, stare at it, touch it … it’s too big of an investment to simply see online. It turned out that Irvine had the sectional we liked, so all seven of us drove down to Irvine. As it turns out, we ended up liking another sectional 3x as expensive as the one I originally liked. Isn’t that how it always happens? It took a day or two to convince Reid it was The One, but he finally agreed with me and the rest is history. A commonly asked question I get a lot is how to keep it clean. Honestly, it’s hard. There really isn’t any easy way to keep a couch clean when you have kids, short of never letting them use it.  However, I have a strict no food or drinks in the great room rule. Zero. With five kids it’s nearly impossible not to have a constant mess. But at least that rule keeps the mess confined to dry, non-sticky items that don’t leave stains on the couch. Small mercies, right?

I’m still working on my office chairs for our family’s new work from home set up. So stay tuned what chairs I actually end up choosing.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Let me know what you think, which room is your favorite?

All the best,

xx Shalice

1.A good jogging bra can elevate an arm workout. I feel more confident and comfortable in this one from Alo.

2. A jump rope can get your heart pumping and burn calories. A perfect at home in the driveway workout. This one has 1k reviews! Did you know you can burn 15 to 20 calories per minute? Around 200-300 calories in a simple 15 minute workout. Not bad for $9 spent in workout equipment. I also love this pilates ring. More about how to use the pilates ring in THIS POST.

3. These leggings are $60 and very flattering

4. White sneakers sleek enough for post workout chic.

5. These drops for focus and chill. Very essential right now. Use code SHALICENOEL for a discount.

6. 24 ounces of water before noon, no problem! Nothing like a new water bottle to inspire you to drink more water. Keeping it from the kids is the hardest part.

7. This jacket is so flattering and great for chilly mornings or evenings when we usually workout.

8. Super flattering $20 tank you can dress up or down.

The Texas Sheet Cake we make EVERY birthday is finally on the blog! I originally got this recipe from a guy in my Poetry Class at Wheaton College. No joke! He made it for the last class kick off party and I told him I HAD to have this recipe. He quickly wrote it on a napkin, and from there its history. I’ve since shared it with my family, friends and YOU! Let me know what you think!

Chocolate Sheet Cake

Yields 1 9 x 13 cake

2 cups flour (I use Kamut flour)

2 cups sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 325F, mix in a large bowl.

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup vegetable oil (I substitute for a stick of butter)
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup water
Bring the butter oil, powder and water to a boil in a sauce pan. Slowly add to the flour mix and mix well.

Two eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk*
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla

*When I don’t have buttermilk, here’s the substitute: for each cup of buttermilk, I add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice. Stir than let stand for about 5 minutes.

Blend till smooth and add to cocoa flour mix. Pour into a 9 x 13 greased and floured pan. Bake till toothpick comes out clean. Let cook at least 5 minutes before icing. Bake at 325 F, for approximately 25 minutes.

CAKE ICING

1/2 cup butter
3 T. cocoa
6 T. Milk
1 t. vanilla (add to cocoa mixture)
1 16 oz box of powdered sugar

Melt butter and cocoa together in a sauce pan- make sure not to burn it. Add milk to butter mixture. Add powdered sugar to cocoa and milk and mix till there are no lumps.

Pour over warm (not hot) cake and spread smooth

Let me know what you think. This is our favorite birthday cake ever!

Enjoy and let me know how you like it in the comments!
